As featured in “Carmel’s Fairy Tale Cottages” by Mike Barton, Stone’s Throw is a historic English Tudor cottage build in 1925 and fully renovated and expanded in 2005 by award-winning architect David Martin.
Surrounded by serene gardens and tucked away in a quiet neighborhood of Carmel-by-the-Sea, Stone’s Throw offers exquisitely updated amenities as well as the perfect location that’s just a short 10 minute walk to the beach and to Ocean Avenue’s restaurants and shopping. It’s also a 10-minute drive to local attractions like golf and sightseeing in Pebble Beach®, vintage Victorian homes and shopping in Pacific Grove, or to historic Cannery Row and the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Or enjoy a short drive to Big Sur to take in the majestic landscape, hiking and dining.
Guests entering under the vine-covered garden arches will think they’ve stepped into a fairy tale, with beautiful gardens blooming with hydrangea, rhododendron, jasmine and roses, framed by native succulents, Japanese maples and palms. Carmel stone walkways lead to the doorway of the cottage, which is crowned in a traditional English country gabled roof.
Stone’s Throw is 2,009 sf. It has a high-end chef’s kitchen, two Carmel stone gas fireplaces, vaulted ceilings and hand-plastered walls in every room, oak hardwood floors and beautiful historical detailing indoors and out.
Living Spaces
Abundant common areas include separate living and family rooms, both with gas fireplaces, as well as a library retreat with games, puzzles and books on local history and nature. The family room has a 55-inch Roku-enabled Smart TV and sofa and leather chairs.
Kitchen and Dining
The fully equipped chef’s kitchen has Alder cabinets, Jerusalem limestone countertops, a Sub-Zero refrigerator and wine fridge, Bosch double ovens and a Thermador five-burner gas cooktop. The adjacent dining area has a vintage cottage dining table with seating for eight.
French doors from both the kitchen and dining areas open fully onto the Carmel stone patio, where overhead string lighting, incredible garden landscaping, fountain, a gourmet gas grill and seating for six, make this a perfect place for outdoor dining.
Bedrooms and Bathrooms
Bedroom #1 is on the main/upper level and overlooks Pescadero Canyon. Open the French doors of its private balcony and hear the sound of ocean waves. The bedroom has a king bed and an en suite bath with heated floors, jetted tub, walk-in shower and dual sinks and mirrors.
Bedroom #2, with a queen bed, is also on the main level, with a full bathroom with a shower across the hall and has a “peek of the ocean” view and views of the canyon.
Bedroom #3, with a king bed and en suite bathroom, is privately situated on the lower level, with a wood beamed ceiling and its own deck. It has the option of being accessed from inside the house or by its own separate entrance.
A twin bed located in an adjacent small bonus room is perfect for a child.
The garage can accommodate one small car and has a 240V Level 2 electric vehicle charger that delivers up to 40A with a 23 foot cable for easy charging even outside the garage. Two cars can park in the driveway.
Well-behaved small dogs are welcome with pre-approval, an additional pet fee and a signed pet addendum. Please note that the yard is not entirely fenced.

Carmel needs to be explored in the early morning hours when tourists are still asleep! Walks along the streets and beaches, taking in the beautiful homes and nature, chatting with locals and enjoying a cup of coffee and a delicious pastry is all part of the package.
Stones Throw is a beautiful cottage comfortably furnished and located well within walking distance to everything in Carmel. It does show a little wear but is still comfortable. Be sure to ask a local where the “secret” bridge is located on Third Street as it truly is a shortcut to town!
We really had no contact with the staff except in the early booking stage. I will say that I was told when I booked that the yard was fenced but when I arrived that is not the case. Our Australian Labradoodle was with us so we had to purchase a set of pet fence to keep her from going through the drainage area and into the woods. The local Pet Thrift Store benefited with the fence donation upon our departure.
Be sure to make a reservation at The Pocket on Lincoln, and use the secret bridge shortcut to get there. With flashlights it’s perfectly safe even at night over the bridge!
